HR Quimper Five Piece Tea Set - "Playing Card Shaped" Circa 1920 - SOLD

A rare and charming tea set, ca. 1920. Playing bridge was the craze, and this little set takes the shape of the card suits:  Teapot, 5 ½” high, 6 ½” from tip of handle to spout, is club-shaped.

Sugar bowl, 4 ¼” high, 2 7/8” square, is diamond-shaped. Creamer, 2 5/8” high, 4 ½” long, is the spade. Cup and saucer, saucer 4 ½” each way, 2” high with its cup atop, is the heart suit.

One tiny chip was restored on the creamer, for the rest, in remarkably fine shape…all the yellow edges show normal wear, partly due, we believe, to the thinness of the glaze. The pieces, though small, still show many of our favorite scenes and details: the dancing couple on the teapot, the seated pipesmoker on the sugar, “Lisette” with her egg basket on the creamer, and the seated biniou player on the cup. And of course, the flowers of Brittany, heather and gorse, scattered throughout.

Each piece is signed twice: on the front, and underneath, a sure mark of extra care and finesse.

$650 complete, plus $60 shipping.
